Charges against political organizer Alan Hallman stayed

The lawyer for Alan Hallman says an assault charge against the longtime Calgary political organizer has been stayed.

Hallman was slated to stand trial at the end of August over allegations revolving around a scuffle at the Progressive Conservative leadership convention in March.

But in a text message Thursday, Hallman’s lawyer, Dale Fedorchuk, said the Crown had stayed the charge.

He said he could not speak to the reasons behind the Crown’s actions, but said Hallman did not do anything, such as alternative measures, to get a stay of proceedings.

“I can indicate that we were prepared to go to trial on Aug. 28 and 29. We had a number of witnesses lined up who were prepared to come to court on Alan’s behalf,” said Fedorchuk.

“We maintained throughout these proceedings that (he) was acting in self-defence.”

Hallman was charged following a March 17 altercation involving security at the Telus Convention Centre, where Jason Kenney had been elected the new leader of the provincial PC party.

He had previously acted as a campaign organizer for Kenney, but was suspended by the party for one year for breaching its leadership code of conduct after posting inappropriate tweets.
